How to Install a Wind Turbine at Home in India — Step-by-Step Guide
Many people assume that installing a wind turbine is a complex, professional-only job. The reality is that residential small wind turbines are designed to be surprisingly simple to install — often easier than setting up a solar panel system. This guide walks you through the entire process.
Before You Start — Check Your Wind Speed
The single most important pre-installation step is confirming that your location has adequate wind. You need a minimum of 3.5 km/h for most small turbines.
Method 1 — Google Search: Open Google and type your location followed by "wind speed." For example, "Lucknow wind speed" or "Jaipur wind speed." This gives you the average wind speed for your area.
Method 2 — Digital Anemometer: For accurate, location-specific data, purchase a digital anemometer (₹500–₹700 on Amazon or Flipkart). Place it at your planned installation spot — usually the highest point of your rooftop — and record readings at different times over several days. If the readings consistently show 3.5 km/h or above, you are ready to proceed.
Pro Tip: An anemometer measures wind at the exact spot where your turbine will be. Google only shows area averages — actual wind at your rooftop could be higher or lower depending on surrounding buildings and terrain.
What You Will Need
Included with the turbine (from Solario Technologies):
- Wind turbine unit
- MPPT or Hybrid controller (depending on model ordered)
- Mounting screws, nuts, and hardware
You need to arrange separately:
- Steel pole: 10-12 feet tall, 4 inches thick. Get this made by a local fabricator or welder. Cost is typically ₹1,000-₹2,500 depending on your city.
- Battery bank: 24V (for 1 kW models) or 48V (for 2 kW and 3 kW models)
- Basic tools: Spanner, screwdriver
- Optional: Cable clips for neat wiring
Step 1 — Install the Pole
The pole is the foundation of your entire setup. It needs to be sturdy and positioned in an open area where wind flow is unobstructed.
Get a 10-12 foot steel pole (iron or steel, 4-inch diameter) fabricated locally. Most fabricators and welders can make this for a modest cost. The pole should have a flat base plate welded at the bottom with holes for bolting.
Fix the pole on your rooftop or ground using a concrete foundation. If mounting on a rooftop, bolt the base plate securely into the concrete surface. Some homeowners also use guy wires (tension cables) for additional stability, especially for taller poles. Position the pole in the most open area of your rooftop — away from stairwell structures, water tanks, and other obstructions that could block wind.
Step 2 — Mount the Turbine on the Pole
This is the easiest step. Both the turbine and the pole have pre-drilled mounting holes. Simply place the turbine assembly on top of the pole, align the holes, insert the provided screws, and tighten the nuts firmly. For horizontal turbines, make sure the blades can rotate freely without hitting anything. For vertical turbines, ensure the helical blade has clearance on all sides.
The turbine and mounting hardware together weigh approximately 20-25 kg, so having a second person to help lift and position it is recommended.
Step 3 — Wiring and Controller Connection
This is where people often feel intimidated, but the wiring is actually straightforward.
Understanding the basics: Your wind turbine generates 3-phase AC (alternating current) power through 3 wires. The controller converts this AC to DC (direct current) for battery storage. The controller outputs 2 DC wires that connect to your battery bank.
For Super MPPT Voltage Booster Controller (wind + battery only):
Turbine → 3 AC wires → Super MPPT Voltage Booster Controller → 2 DC wires → Battery (24V or 48V) → Your existing inverter → Home
Simply connect the 3 colored wires from the turbine into the labeled terminals on the MPPT controller. Then connect the 2 output wires from the controller to the positive and negative terminals of your battery bank. You do not need to touch your existing inverter at all — the battery charges automatically and your inverter draws from it as usual.
For Super MPPT Voltage Booster Controller (solar + wind combined):
Turbine → 3 AC wires + Solar Panel → 2 DC wires → Super MPPT Voltage Booster Controller → 2 DC wires → Battery → Hybrid Inverter → Home + Grid
The hybrid controller has separate input terminals for wind (3 AC wires) and solar (2 DC wires). Connect both, then run the 2 DC output wires to your battery bank. If your battery is full, the hybrid inverter can export excess power to the grid.
Step 4 — Final Check and Testing
After completing the wiring, do a quick verification:
- All connections are tight and secure
- The turbine spins freely in the wind
- The controller display shows charging activity
- Battery voltage is stable and rising when wind blows
That is it. Your wind turbine is installed and operational.
